Olive Branch Music Initiative
One of the ways that we hope to reach out into the neighborhood is through children’s programming. In April 2014 we started through Children in Poverty Grant that offers free music instruction to children. The Olive Branch offers free music training of piano, voice, and it is our hope to organization a neighborhood Children’s Choir.
The lessons consist of 1/2 hour private instruction per week in voice and piano. The targeted students comes from the East End Kids Saturday programming that started in April. The choir will also be recruited out of the Saturday programming. This music incentive is being started from the Children in Poverty Grant and during 2014 we will go the community and partnership with groups and organizations to fund this program for additional years. It is our hope and prayer that this program will be sustainable as a yearly program.
Program Goals:
Piano: To teach the discipline, science and emotion of music through note recognition, chord recognition, phrasing and technical instruction through finger and wrist exercises, learning to read music, learning the theory of how the music is structured. Performances will be in the form of church and community functions.
Voice:
To teach control, breathing exercises and strengthening of the diaphragm muscles to push the sounds up through the vocal chords with confidence and great stamina. To teach volume control, the reading of music, and vocal exercises to instill performance confidence through vocal instruction. Performances will be in the form of church and community functions.
Choir:
The goal is to organize and teach choir singing. The children will learn to blend the sound of the voice, the reading of music, and the proper technique in which to sing. Performances will be in the form of church and community functions.
